The past few years have shown a breakthrough of comedians using songs in there sets. Here are some of the best musical stand up comedians around at the minute.

1. David O'Doherty is a Perrier Award winning Irish stand up comedian. His stand-up has won two awards at the Edingurgh Fringe, Best Newcomer first of all and the if.comedy award in 2008 for his show Let's Comedy. O'Doherty is well known for combining his comedic performance with tunes played on his miniature electronic keyboard. O'Doherty describes his own style of comedy in his song "FAQ for the DOD" as "very low energy musical whimsy" - or "VLEMWy," for short. This is an accurate summary as he delivers both his sung and spoken jokes with an extremely dry sarcasm.

Isy Suttie

2. Isy Suttie was nominated for Best Female Newcomer at the 2008 British Comedy Awards and Female Breakthrough Artist at the 2011 British Comedy Awards. She was nominated for Funniest Woman in the 2010 Loaded Magazine Lafta Awards, which she won in 2011. Her sweet personality mixes really well with her soft songs.

3. Nick Helm mixes great stand up comedy with brilliant comedy songs. His act has a lot of audience participation and a bold shouty delivery. He has some great sayings such as "Alright Cocksuckers" and "Lets kick this in the dick". His loud delivery really gets the audience in the mood for some audience participation. His songs stop the shouty delivery getting to much to handle.

RIP The Peacock and Gamble podcast

In early June 2009 two comedians, Ray Peacock and Ed Gamble started a podcast together. This was the second podcast that the duo have done together, as they created a podcast called the "The Ray Peacock Podcast" before this that ran from 2007-2008. The Ray Peacock podcast featured the actor Raji James or "Little Raji James" as he was known as in the podcast.
The Peacock and Gamble podcast was around 30 minutes long for each episode and was released every Tuesday.
The format for the podcast was silly conversations between Ed and Ray on all sorts of random subjects, not all of which made sense. There was also some regular sections.
One of the regular sections on the podcast was "Eds amazing births". This section involved Ed telling stories of amazing births. Some of the "amazing" births that Ed mentioned had little or no truth to them. The section usually ended with Ray shouting at Ed for not reading the articles properly or for saying offensive and upsetting stories that he passes of as an amazing birth. The story a woman who miscarried a baby without a head comes to mind.
Another section was the "Complaint Letters" section. This was where Ray and Ed take turns each week to write a letter to a company to get free stuff of them. They do this by writing the letter in the style of a mother who has a disabled son named Fraiser. The letters usualy result in Fraiser geting a terrible injury off the product they are writing to.
Unfortunatly after three years the podcast has ended, but that isnt the last we will see from from Peacock and Gamble as they have just finished a tour of their show "The Peacock and Gamble Emergency Broadcast" and are filming a pilot show for BBC three at the moment.

Jons book "Its Not Me Its You" shows his unique writing style and let's you get into the mindset of the man who lives every day dealing with his undiagnosed OCD.

His quest for love doesn't go without hilarity as his quirky downbeat view of the world shows how he has become such a successful comedian. Based on his hit Guardian article, this book about how he has not had a relationship for eight years, because of his obsessive compulsive personality shows how his quest for precision has strongly affected his life.

"It's Not Me It's You" is Witty and captivating. Jons book is a must read, even if it's just to see grammar at its finest.

Its the start of 2012 and we have a year of laughs and giggles ahead so what a better way to tell you who will be the cream of the crop...enjoy

1. Joe Lycett- Joe is a comedian who started doing standup in 2008. In 2010 he was named best newcomer in the Chortle Awards. After great 2011 aperances on E4s "Show and Tell" and becoming a regular panellist on Alexaner Armstrongs BBC 1 show "Epic Win" we can only see things getting bigger and better for Joe.

James Acaster

2. James Acaster-

James Acaster began performing stand up comedy in January 2008 and has carried on rising since that moment. In 2010 James supported Josie Long for the whole of her 2010 UK tour. He won Off The Kerb's Laughing Boy New Act in June 2010. His set includes hallarious stories about his geeky personality and audience interaction He is from the town of Kettering but is based in London.

3. Roisin Conaty- Who said women arn't funny? Roisin Conaty is a comedian from Camden in North London and she is the proof that that statement is false. Roisin makes everyone feel comfortable on stage with her stories of her sometimes embarrasing personality. With appearances on the BBC programe "Have I got News For You" and "Russell Howards Good News" she is a dead cirt to have everyones answer to the question "Are women funny" as a deffinate yes!!

Chris Ramsey

4. Chris Ramsey- Chris is a Geordie comedian who was a finalist in the 2008 Chortle Student Comedy Award and a finalist in the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award the next year. Chris has already made a great ending to his 2011 with aperances on "Never mind the Buzzcocks", "Celebrity Juice" and "Show and Tell". His stand up style is reminiscent of Russell Howard at the start of his stand up career, as he sees the world through rose tinted glasses. He is a real treat and I hope to see more of him in 2012.

5. Nick Helm- Get some great stand up comedy, mix it with some brilliant comedy songs, add a lot of audience participation and a bold shouty delivery then last but not least get some great sayings such as "Alright Cocksuckers" and "Lets kick this in the dick" and you have Nick Helm. Nick is a real treat that steps away from the conventional sets that all seem the same at the minute. He has had apperances on "Show and Tell" and won the award for the funniest joke of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe for his joke “I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. Nick helm is an amazing comedian and you cannot end 2012 with out watching him live. Hes a real treat.
